Common Core

The Common Core State Standards of New York State is a new set education standard that all schools in the state must follow. Since 2013, many schools are currently going through changes to update their curriculum to align with the standards set by the Common Core. Our curriculums have been updated to teach your child what is needed to be able to perform to the criteria. The new standards are tougher and emphasize on the work being shown.

During the beginning of their elementary years, students must be able to understand letter sounds and pronounce simple words. Without a good reading background, the child cannot do well in other subjects like word problems in math, important data in science, or proper information in social studies. Over the years, he or she will be able to pronounce and understand the meaning of many increasingly complex words. In addition, he or she will learn how to comprehend stories from books and work up the reading skill level.

Here at Liberty, we focus on reading heavily. We encourage reading of books that entertain the child to keep them on the book and challenge them to make sure his or her reading level increases. We help with many book reports and give many reading comprehension questions to make sure the child can understand his or her reading level.

Math

  • Fractions

From counting, to fractions, decimals, and percentages, the important math that we need for life are taught in the elementary years. Your child must be able to understand and implement the tools given to him or her in order to succeed.

We stress the importance of math. We go over questions down to the detail. If a child makes a simple mistake, we give them work related to the mistake so that the mistake is less likely to happen. If a child struggles in a topic, we simplify it and then give them work to see if the child has retained what was told. In addition, we also give periodic tests to assess the performance of the child.

Writing

Topics Include:

  • Handwriting
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Capitalization
  • Sentence writing
  • Paragraph writing

When writing, the child must gain a grasp in being able to write sensible and rich sentences. The child’s handwriting must be legible and he or she must be able to connect one sentence with another, forming a paragraph.

Our tutors can make sure the writing of the students is neat, clear, and purposeful. We go over the tools and techniques needed to process a good clean and thorough thought onto the paper. We can help the child with papers, reports and other pieces of writing. In addition, we give the child topics of our own to allow the child’s mind to brainstorm and organize his or her thoughts onto the paper well.
